Castleford & District Cup, 1st Round
Knottingley v Kippax Welfare 05 Sept 2009
Kippax met a much improved Knottingley for their first game of rugby in the new season.
Both teams defending their try lines well. The first break came from a charge down from Josephs kick which ricocheted towards the try line and was picked up by Knottingley who ran, at speed, 40 meters to get the first try of the game which they converted. This was soon answered by Kippax, as Joseph off loaded the ball to James, he dived over the whitewash in the far corner. A strong run from Adam soon saw Kippax back in Knottingley area and good movement of the ball took them within 5 meters on the last tackle. Jason got the ball , and he used all his strength to push through the defence and put Kippax in the lead for the first time. The first half was brought to an end, with Kippax being held up over the line and a knock on by each team.
Knottingley came out strong to start the second half, with Kippax giving away a penalty and knocking on, a try was begging, but a big hit by Callum forced them to knock on. Strong running by Mitchell got Kippax back into try scoring territory and a long cross field kick by Joseph saw Knottingley catch the ball in their in goal area, giving a goal line drop out. Knottingley failed to get the ball 10 meters, Kippax took 2 and got the first points in the second half. An arm wrestle followed as both teams defended and attacked well, Lewis made good ground for Kippax to keep the pressure on. The next try came from a grubber kick, collected by Chris, who fought through Knottingley defence to get the ball down, which was converted putting Kippax 16 - 6 in the lead. The final try of the game was a good team effort, as the ball was moved from one side of the field to the other, by quick hands and saw Joe WT stretch out get the ball over the line, this was converted and brought the final score to 6 -22 and put Kippax through to the next round of the cup. The score doesn’t reflect the effort put in by Knottingley, who have improved in both attack and defence, they never gave up and made sure they made it hard for Kippax. Well done Knottingley, we all wish you Good Luck this season. Lewis and Adam get a mention for the effort they put in at attack, they both had an excellent game. In defence Mitchell and Callum put in some really big hits. New players John and Brad made a good show of themselves, in their first game of rugby league.
