Disappointing start to the season.
Kippax were away to York Acorn for their first league game of the season.
York Acorn v Kippax Welfare 12 Sept 09
York kicked off and won the ball back, Kippax allowed the ball to bounce and saw it go in touch. That set the tone of the game for the first half, York bagged three unanswered, converted tries. Kippax were far below par, both in defence and attack. Too many errors and no communication let them down. The score was 18 nil, in York’s favour as the half time whistle blew.
Kippax started the second half with more spirited play, in every aspect of the game. Callum made four tackles on the bounce and forced York to knock on, on the halfway line. Mitchell took the ball from scrum, with strong, straight running broke through the defensive line and dived over the whitewash, to get Kippax on the score board. Good runs from Tapuwa and Joe WT kept the pressure on York, but their defence was second to none. York kept up their attack making Kippax work hard defending their own line. Lewis, once again, stepped up his game, both in defence and attack. York broke through and looked like they were in for a certain try, but Brad, who seemed to come from nowhere, made a brave try saving tackle. A few more sets and Kippax found themselves back in York’s half, with team work and quick hands the ball was passed down the line and saw Ryan score in the corner. Both teams defence was strong, Matty stepped up his game and made some excellent tackles, to deny York any points in the second half.
The final score, 18 - 8 was a fair reflection of the game. Man of the Match for Kippax was a split decision and went to Lewis and Mitchell.
