First blood to Kippax
Vertou XIII 0 v 22 Kippax Welfare U12's 29th May 2010
With a quick 10 minute warm up behind them it was straight into action for Kippax against the first of three opponents.
The tone was well and truly set with the referee penalising the first two tackles Kippax made but strong defence kept Vertou out despite concerted pressure. On their first meaningful attack Kippax scored as Max gathered a last tackle cross field kick from Liam and grounded wide left for the opening try. Liam added the extras for a 6-0 lead and as Vertou stepped up their intensity there was strong tackling down the middle from Harrison, George and James. A break from Jordan and some enterprising play from Sam then allowed Liam to put in another kick and this time is was Mosa who got on the end of it. Another well taken kick gave Kippax a 12-0 lead heading into half time and with Luke and James Bar holding firm out wide that's how it stayed..
Defences were on top early in the second half and there were some super tackles from Russ and Adam, with Tom and Ben alternating at fullback and both proving equally effective. William, Thomas and Azza drove the ball in well but with the French wrapping the ball up there was little opportunity for any off loads. It was Max who opened up the second half scoring as he went over from a neat pass from William on the back of a cracking kick return from Ben. Although Vertou battled bravely they were unable to break the Kippax line, with Harry, Tom and Jack all contributing to the defensive effort. Ben had the honour of scoring the final try when he took a neat pass from Russ to cross under the sticks. Liam slotted the conversion and Kippax had an opening win.
